Start with these
three checks

These are the first things we’d ask you about on the phone. Working through them in order tells us where to start.

1. Look for a tripped GFCI — anywhere on the floor

GFCI outlets protect other outlets downstream on the same circuit. The tripped device may not be in the same room as the dead outlet — it could be in a bathroom down the hall, in the garage, or outside. Look for any GFCI outlet (the ones with TEST and RESET buttons) that has its RESET button popped out, and press it firmly. If it clicks and holds, that may be all it is. If it immediately pops back out, there’s a fault somewhere on the protected circuit that’s keeping it from resetting.

2. Check the breaker panel for a tripped breaker

A tripped breaker doesn’t always flip fully to the OFF position. Many breakers trip to a middle position — not fully on, not fully off — that can be easy to miss if you’re scanning quickly. Look carefully at the row of breakers for one that sits between ON and OFF or feels slightly springy when you push on it. To reset, push it firmly to OFF first, then back to ON. 3. Check whether the outlet is switched

Some outlets in older Sacramento homes — particularly living room outlets — are controlled by a wall switch rather than always-on. If the outlet is dead but there’s no tripped GFCI and no tripped breaker, try flipping any nearby wall switches that don’t seem to control a known fixture. A switched outlet is common enough to check before assuming there’s a fault.

When Self-Checks Don’t Solve It

If the GFCI check, breaker check, and switch check don’t bring the outlet back, the cause is a wiring fault and finding it requires tracing the circuit. Here’s what we look at.

Tracing power loss through the circuit

We test at the outlet, then work backward through the circuit to find where voltage is lost. Power may disappear at a loose wire connection inside the outlet box itself, at a junction box elsewhere in the wall, or at a connection inside the panel. Each of these has a different repair.

Inspecting connections for heat damage

A wiring connection that failed under load — especially one that failed gradually — often shows signs of heat or arc damage: discolored wire insulation, melted plastic, or a distinctly different smell inside the box. We check for these because a connection that failed under heat isn’t fixed by just reconnecting the wire.

Checking prior work on the circuit

In Sacramento’s older housing stock, dead outlets are sometimes the result of DIY or unlicensed work on the same circuit. Backstabbed connections (pushed into the back of an outlet rather than screwed to the terminal) are particularly prone to loosening and failing. We check every connection on the affected run.

Root Causes

What usually causes

Tripped GFCI upstream

The most common cause. A GFCI on the same circuit tripped in response to a detected fault — or simply failed. Standard outlets downstream of it go dead. Resetting the GFCI restores them if there’s no actual fault on the circuit.

Loose connection in the wiring

Wire connections at outlets, junction boxes, and panel terminals can loosen over time — particularly in homes with aluminum branch wiring or older backstabbed connections. A loose connection at any point in the run cuts power to everything beyond it.

Failed outlet device

Outlet receptacles can fail on their own — particularly GFCI outlets, which have more components than standard receptacles. A GFCI that won’t reset and has no detectable fault downstream may simply be a failed device that needs replacement.

Can I reset a GFCI myself?

Yes. GFCI outlets have a small TEST and RESET button in the center of the face. Press RESET firmly until you feel it click. If it won’t stay set — if it clicks out immediately — the GFCI has either detected a genuine fault condition somewhere on the protected circuit, or the device itself has failed. At that point, resetting won’t help and a diagnostic call is the right step.

Why would an outlet go dead without the breaker tripping?

GFCI protection is circuit-wide, not device-specific. A GFCI outlet or GFCI breaker trips silently on its own — it doesn’t flip the main branch breaker. The dead outlet is often a standard receptacle running downstream of a GFCI device in another room. Beyond GFCI, a loose wire connection at a receptacle or junction box can fail and cut power to everything beyond it on the circuit without any breaker trip at the panel.

Are all the outlets in a room on the same circuit?

Not necessarily. In older Sacramento homes especially, circuit layouts don’t follow room boundaries. Two outlets on opposite walls of the same room might be on different circuits. And GFCI outlets in a bathroom or kitchen often protect outlets in nearby areas — sometimes an adjacent bathroom, a hallway, or an outdoor outlet. The only way to know exactly which outlets share a circuit is to trace it.

When is a dead outlet an emergency?

A dead outlet on its own is generally not an emergency. The situations that warrant immediate attention are: burn marks or discoloration on the outlet face, an outlet that feels warm or hot to the touch, a smell of burning near the outlet or on that wall, or a visible arc or spark before it went dead. Those signs suggest a fault that could cause a fire, not just a failed connection or tripped GFCI.
