The first question we ask is where the flickering is happening. The answer tells us which part of the system to look at first.

One fixture only

Flickering isolated to a single light fixture points to something at or immediately behind that fixture: a loose wire connection at the fixture itself, a failing bulb or LED driver, or a bulb that’s incompatible with the dimmer controlling it. This is the most straightforward case. Before calling, try re-seating or replacing the bulb. If the fixture is on a dimmer, check whether it’s LED-compatible. If flickering continues after those steps, the fixture wiring or the switch needs inspection.

Several fixtures on one circuit

When multiple fixtures on the same circuit or in the same area all flicker, the fault is upstream of the fixtures — typically a loose or failing connection in a junction box, at the switch, or at a shared splice point in the circuit. The connection may be loose at a wire nut, at a backstabbed outlet or switch terminal, or at a panel terminal. Heat cycling from daily load changes is a common contributor to gradual loosening. Whole house, or unrelated circuits at the same time

When flickering affects circuits throughout the house simultaneously, the cause is higher up the supply chain: a loose connection at the service entrance, a problem with the main panel neutral or bus, or a utility-side voltage fluctuation. Whole-house flickering that correlates exactly with large appliances starting is usually motor inrush — but whole-house flickering that has no clear pattern, or that’s getting worse over time, warrants voltage testing at the panel and potentially a utility check.

Once you know where it’s happening, the next question is when — specifically whether it’s tied to other things turning on.

Brief dimming exactly when HVAC or large motors start

Electric motors draw several times their running current for a fraction of a second when they start. HVAC compressors, well pumps, and air compressors are the most common examples. This inrush causes a brief voltage dip on the circuit they’re connected to, and sometimes on nearby circuits if they share a panel bus. Momentary dimming that lasts only the instant the motor starts and recovers immediately is generally not a wiring fault — it’s a load characteristic. It can sometimes be improved with a dedicated circuit for the motor load, but it rarely indicates a problem with existing wiring.

Flickering with no pattern and no correlation to appliances

Random flickering on one or more circuits, with no consistent trigger, points to an intermittent connection problem: a wire that makes and breaks contact as temperatures change, vibration moves it slightly, or oxidation builds up at a splice. Intermittent faults are the hardest type to catch during a diagnostic visit because they may not be present at the time. We look for evidence of the fault — heat staining, discolored insulation, corroded contacts — rather than waiting for it to occur.

Flickering that gets worse when running multiple loads

If lights flicker more when other loads on the same circuit are running — a lamp that flickers when a vacuum is plugged into a nearby outlet, for instance — the circuit may be running near its load capacity. This isn’t necessarily a fault in the wiring, but it can indicate that the circuit is undersized for how it’s being used. It can also indicate a high-resistance connection somewhere on the circuit that’s causing a voltage drop under load.

What this pattern means

Ordinary flickering from motor inrush or loose connections causes lights to dim momentarily. A different and more concerning pattern is lights that brighten abnormally when a large load turns on, or lights and appliances on different circuits that seem to affect each other in unusual ways. This symptom can indicate a loose or open neutral connection — at the main panel, at the service entrance, or at the utility’s drop connection.

Why a neutral fault causes this

Your home’s two 120V legs share a common neutral return path. When the neutral connection is compromised, the two legs can no longer balance independently — loads on one leg effectively steal voltage from the other. The result is that some circuits see higher-than-normal voltage while others see lower-than-normal, and the imbalance shifts as loads turn on and off. Sensitive electronics, including appliances with motors or power supplies, can be damaged by sustained over-voltage.

What to do if you observe this

Call sooner rather than later. A loose utility neutral is the utility’s responsibility and can be reported to your utility — SMUD, Roseville Electric, or PG&E depending on your area — directly. A loose neutral inside the service entrance or panel is the electrician’s work. Either way, the condition can cause equipment damage and, in some cases, creates a fire risk from sustained over-voltage at a connection point. Voltage testing under load

We measure voltage at the affected fixture and circuit, both at rest and under load, to determine whether the voltage is stable or dropping under load. A voltage drop that exceeds what normal wiring resistance should produce indicates a high-resistance connection somewhere between the panel and the fixture. We then trace where on the circuit that resistance is concentrated.

Connection inspection at fixtures, boxes, and the panel

We inspect wire terminations at the affected fixtures, in junction boxes on the circuit, and at the panel terminals for signs of loosening, oxidation, heat discoloration, or physical damage. Backstabbed connections and aluminum branch wiring are particularly prone to high-resistance failures over time, and both are common in Sacramento’s older housing stock.

Neutral and service entrance check

When the pattern suggests a neutral or whole-house issue, we check neutral integrity at the panel — measuring voltage between legs and to neutral under different load conditions. If we find evidence that the issue is utility-side (measurements at the panel main lugs show voltage irregularity with nothing else changed), we document what we found and advise contacting the utility.

Is a flickering light always a wiring problem?

Not always. A single fixture flickering can be as simple as a loose bulb, a failing LED driver, or a bulb that’s incompatible with a dimmer. Those aren’t wiring faults. Flickering that affects multiple fixtures, correlates with large appliances turning on, or involves lights that brighten rather than dim is more likely to involve wiring. The scope and pattern determine whether there’s a wiring issue worth diagnosing.

Why do my lights dim when the HVAC or a large appliance kicks on?

Can LED bulbs cause flickering?

Yes. LEDs are more sensitive to dimmer compatibility than incandescent bulbs. This is a fixture and bulb compatibility issue, not a wiring fault.
